The Ego Role

The ego has two faces, and both often battle each other. To gain clarity, we need to look at both sides. The choice begins with the physical survival layer. One side might say, “My Life is horrible. I cannot survive on the little that I have. Poor me, no one cares about me—no one is helping me. I cannot get a decent job. Everyone is to blame for my life. I am not worthy. I am dysfunctional. I am not smart. I am not pretty. Why can’t I have what other people have? It is not fair. I have so many enemies.”

On the other side, it plays the role of “I am better than anyone else. I am richer. I am more educated, and I am physically more attractive. I am the boss. I can order people around. No one can tell me what to do. Everyone else is beneath me. I hold the power. I am the only one who can handle it. I am the only one who can do the job. No one can tell me what to do, for I know how to do it better. I am going to do the job for her because she cannot do it. It is my destiny to suffer in life. I am being punished for what I did.”

The spiritual ego runs along the same line and flip-flops from one side to the other: “I know more about spiritual stuff than some of these gurus.  I should heal them. They need my gifts. I should tell them what is right and what is wrong. Poor me, no one cares how much I know—no one is listening to me. I know about all that psychic stuff—I’ll show them. They all should share their stuff with me without me having to ask them, and I should not have to pay for it.  I should be the Guru. They should all listen to me. I am the only one who has the right message. No one can tell me what to do or how to do it. I am the one with the psychic gifts. My gifts are better and truer than others. I have the right to criticize others because I have the gift. I am being spiritually attacked. Someone is sending evil psychically to make me sick because they hate me. Black spirits attack me in bed at night so that I cannot sleep. They invade my mind so that I think that I am going crazy. They are doing this to me. I have to do penance for my sins. I have to meditate for hours if I want to become enlightened. I have to chant every free minute I have and search for more chants. I have to pay money and take as many spiritual classes as I can to store up my points.”

The questions the human consciousness has here are whether to mire itself and indulge in the emotions of both sides and completely choose the drama of life or begin the journey out of the darkness of the soul. Remember that every choice is honored and respected by the Divine.
